I found Dr Vax's tutorials particularly helpful, though they're a bit 3d printing focused, even though everything translates really well as a skill base for other stuff. I had absolutely no CAD experience whatsoever, and was up and running in a couple days. It's open source and not going anywhere, and still in active development (version. Not much help with the file, but I'd suggest just learning FreeCAD if you're looking to accurately model things. Just make sure to tag the post with the flair and give a little background info/context.
